Preparing for the Praxis I – PPST,
Pre-Professional Skills Test

 

Instructional Objectives/Learning Outcomes

The purpose of this course is to familiarize participants with all of the question types appearing on the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) as well as with general strategies and techniques for succeeding on the exam. Participants will have ample opportunity to drill with the individual question types and to practice timed tests. Specifically, participants will

  • learn various techniques for improving their ability to read quickly and completely;
  • become familiar with the six reading comprehension question types that appear on the test and with techniques for answering them;
  • receive instruction in the various English grammar and diction points most frequently emphasized on the test;
  • receive instruction in composition;
  • practice writing sample essays;
  • review general arithmetic, algebra, geometry, word problems, and formulas and procedures needed to answer PPST math questions;
  • take timed tests to practice general test-taking strategies and techniques such as process of elimination and guesstimation.

Student Assessment

Participants will receive 2.5 CEUs, provided they attend all five five-hour sessions of the course.

Course Prerequisites

This class assumes that the student possesses a basic knowledge of high school arithmetic, algebra, and geometry OR has taken the “Math Review for Standardized Tests” course.
