Testimonials

When we brought our son to Annette Spector for educational testing in the spring of 2003, we had a 16 year old kid who was not achieving his full academic potential. He was managing to maintain mostly As and Bs but school seemed like more of a struggle than it should be. Words like “lazy”, “tired”, “unmotivated” were starting to crop up on school reports. He was becoming despondent and increasingly distracted, missing deadlines and failing to complete projects. He began trying to make himself feel better by hanging out with a “cool” crowd known to indulge in risky behavior.

Annette listened carefully to our summary of the situation and proceeded to test our son gently and patiently over a period of several weeks. She was completely non-judgemental of his earlier mistakes. She recognized his strengths and his wonderful personality and showed him and us how to understand the complex dynamics of the teenage underachiever. She assured us that this type of situation is not unusual, but that without help a kid like ours could easily lose hope and self-esteem.

There was a tremendous feeling of relief for our son when Annette was able to explain to him that he was not "stupid" but that there were specific cognitive and processing weaknesses which were causing many of his problems. At the same time, she highlighted areas in which he excelled, another boost for his self-confidence.

Annette recommended mild medication to aid focus, which was prescribed by our pediatrician. She also helped us locate a school for "diverse learners" where our son is now in his junior year and making academic progress with a strong 3.5 average. We now see the words “ diligent”, “pleasant” and “on-task” on his report cards. With new-found confidence in himself he ran for school treasurer (and won) and has taken up flying lessons, rock climbing and boxing. He has developed healthy relationships with old and new friends and one special girlfriend. He is enthusiastically researching colleges.

The reemergence of our son’s energy, drive and his easy-going personality in these critical high-school years is a joy. We have thankfully left behind the days of sadness, helplessness and confusion and must thank Annette Spector for her patience, encouragement and advice throughout this process.
